As a child, I was never drawn to the cakes smothered in icing or piled high with frosting. To me, those sugary layers hid the soul of the cake — the true flavor that should shine on its own. What I loved most were the simple, comforting sweet breads — zucchini bread, honey almond loaf, anything rich with cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom. Those spices filled our home with warmth, the kind that wrapped around you like a hug.

Growing up in Jamaica, my fondest memories were spent standing on tiptoe at the kitchen counter, eyes wide with wonder, as I watched my mother bring magic to life. She had this graceful way of turning the simplest ingredients into something unforgettable. Every whisk, every pour, every scent drifting through the house told a story of love, care, and community.

My mother wasn’t just a baker — she was the baker. Everyone in our neighborhood knew that if there was a church event, a wedding, or a birthday, she was the one they would call. Her cakes carried comfort. Her puddings brought people together. And her kitchen was always open, always welcoming.

Years later, in 2015, I decided to continue that legacy. Rhoda’s Place — named after my mother — was born from the same love for home-baked sweetness and the same belief that food can connect hearts. Every Bundt cake, every loaf, every bite is a tribute to her hands, her laughter, and the joy she poured into baking.
